Frostbite Racing

Frostbite racing at the Annapolis Yacht Club began in the winter of 1962-1963.  Seven Rainbows were the inaugural class with five short races a day, starting and finishing at the club.  Gladiators joined the Frostbite racing in the fall of 1963 and MORC made the third class in 1964.  The first Hangover Bowl (New Year's Day) was held in 1966.

Today, Frostbite racing is split into two halves; from November to early December and February to the end of March.  The Special Events Race Committee endeavors to run two races every Sunday; with a break in between to allow competitors to "warm their spirits" in the main club house.  The event is open to members of the Annapolis Yacht Club, Eastport Yacht Club, Naval Academy Sailing Squadron, and Severn Sailing Association.  Competitors vie for awards in several classes: PHRF, Cal 25, Etchells, J/22, J/80, and J/105. 

Racing starts at 1:00 from one of two points on the Navy sea wall. The competitors sail around several government marks then back into Spa Creek to finish in front of the Club. After lunch we go out and do it again. Many members and guest enjoy the spirited finish from the warmth of the Club while enjoying brunch or a late lunch. It is as good as wednesday nights except you get to watch it twice!

The Hangover Bowl is run every January 1st starting around noon. Boats entered in the Frostbite series are automatically entered into the event. Thoes that just show up need to tip the bartender. We have 4 starts off the front deck and competitors follow a fun zig-zag course out into Spa Creek. The return around a "mystery" mark sand finishing back at the club. This is a low-key fun race with usually 40-50 competitors. Following the race we have pizza and beer in the Club. It is a great way to get out of the house and get a good start on the new year!
