Off the Bay Cruising
Occasionally, cruises are coordinated and made to destinations off the Chesapeake, either using the members’ vessels or chartering at a distant location.
We have discovered that it takes a very special set of circumstances for cruisers to leave their boats at home or leave the Chesapeake Bay while venturing elsewhere during our cruising season. Hence the August 2006 cruise in the San Juan Islands - where the daytime temperature is 65-70 degrees and it drops into the fifties at night, while the August temperatures on the Chesapeake are not as friendly.
2006 Anacortes-San Juan Islands Cruise
The San Juan Islands of northwest Washington were the destination for one of these events in August 2006. AYC members chartered 12 boats and 36 members, friends, and spouses cruised for a week in the pristine waters north of Puget Sound. Some nights were spent in picturesque anchorages. Ports of call included Friday Harbor, Roche Harbor, and the Rosario Resort on Orcas Island. Several extended the length of their stay while touring the surrounding area either before or following the week-long charter.
2007 Cruising
A small group cruised the Greek Islands during the summer of 2007. Another small group chartered in the US Virgin Islands in February 2008.
2008 Cruise to New England
An extended cruise to New England was conducted during the Summer of 2008. Sailing vessels departed Annapolis a few days ahead of the powerboats with all rendezvousing in Newport, RI on Friday, June 27. A two week cruising itinerary followed the initial rendezvous with stops in Narragansett Bay, among the Elizabeth Islands, Nantucket, and the 4th of July in Martha’s Vineyard. A few vessels ventureed north of Cape Cod with stops along the Massachusetts shore, Boston, Marblehead, etc. And a few hardy souls continued on to Maine.
Future Cruises
We return to New England during the summer of 2010 with the mainstay of the cruise being the 4th of July in Bristol, Rhode Island, at the Herreshoff Museum. Potential future destinations for coming seasons - perhaps every 2nd or 3rd year - include Croatia and the Channel Islands north of the San Juans. Stay tuned.
