Coast Guard Foundation Announces Overnight Sailboat Race - by AYC Broadcast

The Coast Guard Foundation, a non-profit organization committed to the education, welfare and morale of Coast Guard members and their families, announced today it is co-hosting an overnight sailboat race on April 27-28, 2013, the Coast Guard Foundation Cup. The Annapolis Yacht Club (AYC) is the co-organizing authority of the race that will start and finish outside of Annapolis Harbor.

Limited Use Windsurfers for Sale - by AYC Broadcast

AYC is making available to our membership, on a “first come, first served” basis, the opportunity to purchase windsurfers that have had very limited use and are stored at the Sailing Center. The boards are Techno 293 CTS’ and each set includes the board, boom, two sails, and sail bags.

World Cruising Club announces Portsmouth, Virginia as the new home port for its sailing rallies held on the east coast of the USA. The City of Portsmouth VA will be the new home of the ARC Caribbean 1500, ARC Bahamas and ARC Europe rallies.

Yacht Club Donates Time to Angel Tree Program - by The Capital

2013 Winter Where's the Burgee Contest & Stories From Our Members - by AYC Broadcast

Once again, our most recent Where's the Burgee Contest was a huge success. With winter underway, we’ve decided to introduce a Winter Where's the Burgee Contest to see what frosty photos our members will snap over the next couple of months. Participants can win a dinner for two with a bottle of wine (1st prize), lunch for four (2nd prize), or a $50 gift card for the Ship's Store (3rd prize).

Member enthusiasm over the Where's the Burgee Contest has been phenomenal and we would also like to take this time to share some of the emotional and entertaining stories from these submissions. Remembering Bernard Gaillet - by John E C Patmore

It is with deep regret that we announce that Bernard "Bernie" Gaillet passed away on the morning of Monday, January 7, 2013 after an episode with Leukemia. He was a former member of the Annapolis Yacht Club and was instrumental in AYC's Cruising Fleet visiting the Sarasota Yacht Club during their early winter migrations to the area. Bernie will be sorely missed by his many friends both here at AYC and at the Sarasota Yacht Club. Further details will be published as they become available.

Matthew Schofield, a Broadneck High student, placed 12th in the Full-Rig Laser class at the ISSA Single-handed National Championships held in Long Beach on Nov. 9 - 10. Schofield, an Annapolis Yacht Club junior, grew stronger as the regatta went along — posting a pair of seconds, a third and a fifth on the second day.

The Race Committee got off 5 races on Saturday with 6 more on Sunday allowing for 2 drops for the competitors. Conditions were on the chilly side especially on Sunday when the breeze piped up but other than the low temperature on the water it was all smiles from the competitors and parents.

Brian Keane Wins J/80 North American Championship - by AYC Broadcast

Brian Keane of Beverly Yacht Club sailing Savasana with his team of Steve Hunt, Mike Wolfs, and Ben Powers has been crowned 2012 J/80 North American Champion, edging out defending champions Glenn Darden and Reese Hillard on Le Tigre who finished just one point behind.

Junior Sailing: MASSA Team Race Fall Championship - by Joel Labuzetta

The AYC Junior Fleet Race Committee and plenty of volunteers ran 96 starts this weekend to complete two round robins and a final four in the MASSA Team Race Fall Championship. Annapolis High finished 4th overall after winning a sail-off with Spalding to get into the finals. This ends the regular high school season and the junior program shifts focus to Opti, C420, and I-420 clinics and winter events.

2012 J/22 Club Championship - by Chip Thayer

The first J/22 Club Championship began 10 years ago as the AYC J/22 fleet fall wrap-up and fleet championship. Several years later it was opened up to include the Severn Sailing Association J/22 fleet. AYC and SSA now run the event in alternate years. This year it was run by AYC and further broadened to include Eastport YC.

Hurricanes Are No Match for the Cruising Fleet! - by AYC Broadcast

The forecast for Hurricane Sandy collided with the Pitchfords' plans for the Crusiing Fleet's final on-the-water event on October 27. However, the Pitchfords thumbed their noses at Sandy and generously moved the event into their home.

AYC Members Compete in J/80 North American Championships - by AYC Broadcast

Three Annapolis Yacht Club J/80 owners will travel to Texas this weekend to compete in the J/80 North American Championships. The regatta takes place from Friday, November 2 through Sunday, November 4. Members interesting in keeping track of the boats that will be sporting the AYC burgee can watch the action through the live tracking system at www.tractrac.com.

2012 IRC East Coast Championship & One Design Regatta - by Storm Trysail Club

The Storm Trysail Club’s 2012 IRC East Coast Championship & One Design Regatta took place on Chesapeake Bay (Annapolis, Md.) this past weekend with a shortened two-day format due to the impending threat of Hurricane Sandy.

AYC Waterfront Update - Post Sandy - by AYC Broadcast

At this time the dry storage boats will remain at the top of the Sailing Center lot as we currently have another high tide that is predicted to rise above normal and once again flood a good portion of the lot up to the Butler Building. The power will stay off on the Clubhouse docks until after the high tide and the Dock Masters reassess the situation and make sure it is safe to turn the electricity back on to L & M dock and the cranes on the Eastport side.

Once Jim Hyde and his staff feel that we are safe to get back to normal operation they will move all the boats back down and it will be business as usual. We have a busy weekend coming up with the launching of J/70s and J/22s for their regattas as well as the first day of Frostbites on Sunday so we appreciate your patience and support while we deal with the aftermath of Sandy.

This past Saturday, October 20, 2012, AYC competed in the inaugural National Sailing Hall of Fame (NSHOF) match race challenge in the classic wooden yachts, Bull and Bear (sandbagger boats) in Annapolis’ Severn River. Eastern Yacht Club (EYC) from Marblehead Massachusetts challenged Annapolis Yacht club to the match race after meeting and forging a strong relationship during the NYYC challenge last summer.

AYC Junior Matt Schofield Qualifies for Cressy National Championship - by AYC Broadcast

Two Broadneck High sailors have qualified for the Interscholastic Sailing Association Singlehanded National Championship, being held in mid November off Long Beach, Cal. Junior Zach Hill and senior Matt Schofield both advanced by placing high at the Mid-Atlantic Scholastic Sailing Association qualifier held last weekend at Brant Beach Yacht Club in New Jersey. Matt will go on to compete in the Cressy National Championship in Long Beach, CA from November 9 - 11.

Chef Michael Herr Receives Executive Chef Certification - by AYC Broadcast

Annapolis Yacht Club's Executive Chef, Michael Herr, has received the Certified Executive Chef certification by the American Culinary Federation. The certification identifies chefs who have demonstrated a level of culinary competence and expertise through their education, work experience, culinary knowledge, and skills that is consistent with the executive chef level.

AYC's Women's Group Enjoy Trip to New Barnes Museum - by Lauren Koppelman

Since 1922 when Dr. Barnes established the Barnes Foundation, visitors from around the world have made the pilgrimage to the Barnes in Merion, PA to savor 181 Renoirs, 69 Cezannes, and 59 Matisses along with works by Manet, Degas, Seurat, Prendergast, Titian, and Picasso. On May 19, the museum moved to its new home in the cultural center of Philadelphia where we will experience the unparalleled collection displayed as Dr. Barnes intended.

Our winter Burgee Contest was a huge success, so we’ve decided to introduce a summer Burgee Contest to see what fair weather photos our members will snap over these summer months. Members submitted a number of exciting and fun photos during our last contest and we hope that our summer contest will produce even greater results. Deadline for submissions is Monday, October 1.

Mirage Keeps Hospice Cup Success Going - by Nancy Noyes

The team led by Cedric Lewis and Fredrik Salvesen on their J/105 Mirage not only won the day’s largest class, but also earned their third consecutive overall Hospice Cup title, signifying outstanding sailing over three consecutive years. The team also claimed the Sajak Family Foundation Trophy for the best performance in a Cruising One-Design class for their work on the race course. Following Mirage to the podium in the J/105 fleet were AYC members Carl & Scott Gitchell/Tenacious in 2nd and Bob Reeves/A Train in 3rd. Other top finishers from AYC included Jim Muldoon/Donnybrook in PHRF A0 and Tate Russack/Diesel & Willy Comerford/Always 4 Sail in the hot new J/70 fleet. Rolex Farr 40 World Championship - Designed to Win - by Farr 40 Class Association

Chicago architect Helmut Jahn has won the 2012 Rolex Farr 40 World Championship after nine races across four day of competition on Lake Michigan. Commodore Kevin McNeil was able to hold on to 7th place after being tied for 7th going into the final day of racing. In a very competitive 20 boat fleet made up of a large number of veteran Farr 40 sailors, this was a great finish for a reasonably new to the Farr 40 fleet owner/driver especially at the world championship level.

McNeil Upwardly Mobile at Farr 40 World Championship - by Jan Harley, Media Pro

Commodore Kevin McNeil on Nightshift saw his best result thus far in the Rolex Farr 40 World Championship with finishes of 10-2-6 on the second day of competiton in the 20-boat international fleet. He has moved up from 15th to 7th in the overall standings. Five additional races are planned before the competition wraps up on Thursday.

It is 3:45 in the morning. Huge waves pound the boat as we race across the Gulf Stream on the way to Bermuda. It is dark, dank and smelly as I crawl out of my bunk to put on foul weather gear and a safety harness. At 62, I am trying to remember why I thought this was cool when I was a fearless 29-year-old racing in the infamous 1979 Fastnet Race, considered the roughest ocean race on record. Now, the routine is hard.

Bobby Frey Appears in The Capital - by AYC Broadcast

Annapolis Race Week has gone through many changes and evolutions over the years. Sponsors have come and gone while various classes have been added or dropped. Recently, headquarters for the event were moved from the Annapolis Yacht Club Annex to Annapolis City Dock to increase visibility. In an effort to be environmentally friendly, organizers adopted a “Go Green” campaign last year. Through it all, there has been one constant for most of the past decade. Bobby Frey has remained a steadying presence as on-water chairman of annual three-day regatta.

Updated: Eleven Juniors Participate in U.S. Youth Sailing Championships - by AYC Broadcast

Eleven of our Junior Sailors were accepted into the U.S. Youth Sailing Championships, hosted by the Columbia Gorge Racing Association, which were held in Cascade Locks, Oregon from August 14 - 18. The Youth Champs are the most competitive youth regatta in the country. This event, which is invitational by resume, presented challenging conditions with breeze up to 25 knots the first two days of racing. The Juniors were led by Patrick Floyd and A.J. Libby who placed 4th overall leading them to the highest finish an Annapolis youth has seen in many years.

Friday’s final day of racing at US SAILING’s Chubb US Junior Championships on San Francisco Bay proved to be a climactic finish for all three talented fleets. The Sears Cup and the Bemis and Smythe Trophies were up for grabs in what was truly a great day for these young athletes. Matt Schofield finished in 8th in the Byte CII Division, while Patrick Floyd and A.J. Libby finished 4th in the Club 420 Division. Congratulations to our Juniors on their wonderful accomplishments.

San Francisco Yacht Club Dominates Corinthian Cup on Home Turf - by Bob Putnam

Match racing teams from AYC visited the San Francisco Yacht Club in the third edition of the Corinthian Cup, and the spirited competition in a picture postcard setting featured exhilarating wind and sea conditions, splendid hospitality and great camraderie between the sailors. The racing was conducted in J/22s, with each club fielding one senior and one junior team.

After attending a great dinner hosted by the New York Yacht Club on Saturday night, Sunday morning saw an 8-12 knot breeze with 3 rainbows left over from a passing shower. In the Consolation Series, the team of Harrison Hawk from Annapolis Yacht Club defeated the team of Ethan Lounsbury from the Lauderdale Yacht Club 4-1.

Racing wrapped up yesterday with a complete change of season on Lake Traunsee for the final race, the intermittent rain and unseasonal cold giving way to sunshine. But this came at the expense of wind. Porter Kavle Heads Overseas for IODA Magic Marine Regatta in Holland - by AYC Broadcast

Junior Sailor Porter Kavle and family have departed for the IODA Magic Marine Easter Regatta this Friday in Holland. Porter is a recent recipient of the Art Libby Corinthian trophy and the Bill Bennett leadership award. This will be the first time Porter has participated in an international regatta. There are 20 USA team members and this regatta will host about 250 sailors from all over the world in some fierce competition. And did we mention the lake just thawed last week? Porter will proudly be sailing under the AYC burgee in Holland.

Congressional Cup - Williams Closes on Brady - by Sail World

On Day 3 of 48th Congressional Cup Ian Williams raced like the world's No. 1-ranked match racer that he is. Soon after the defending champion and his crew from the UK reached the dock after a perfect 4-0 day, the team's boat hostess Rebekah Bennett arrived bearing a plate of post-race goodies and wearing the glistening silver tiara they had asked her to display.

Artemis Racing Debuts Full Scale AC72 Wing - by Artemis Racing

The culmination of more than 35,000 man hours and a tremendous amount of hard work on the part of the entire team came to fruition today when Artemis Racing sailed with the team’s first AC72 wing. While the Defender and other Challengers for the 34th America’s Cup have chosen to train and test elements for the AC72 catamarans using smaller boats, specifically AC45 and SL33 catamarans, Artemis Racing opted to build a full size wing from the outset.

Team Race 101 is a Huge Success - by Jay Kehoe

Team Race 101 was a huge success, especially if you judge success by the smiles on the faces of our members. Over 30 people attended our classroom training session on Saturday afternoon. On Sunday, four boats took to the water and attempted to recreate what we had outlined in chalk the day before. Each boat had four sailors supplemented by Junior sailor Lili Salvesen and Baldwin Cup Team members John Howell, Rob Kottler and Derrick Lynch. We would like to send a special thank you to the fleet members who made this possible and hopefully it will become a more regulat event.

With the conclusion of the Melges 32 Miami Championship came the end of the 2012 Midwinter Championship Series (MCS). The Series consisted of combined scores from the 2011 Gold Cup in Fort Lauderdale, Key West and Miami. A total of thirty-two teams competed in the Series and atop the field is Champion John Kilroy on Samba Pa Ti.

The National Sailing Center & Hall of Fame has started accepting online nominations for the 2012 Class of the National Sailing Hall of Fame. Categories include Sailing, Technical/Design and Contributors. Each candidate should be a U.S. Citizen; however if someone of international birth has had a significant impact on the development of the sport of sailing in the United States, they may be included. Nominees must be 45 years of age or older. Posthumous nominations may be made 5 years postmortem or in the year the deceased would have reached 45 years of age, whichever is sooner. The nomination period will run from tomorrow, March 1 through May 1, with the inductees for 2012 determined by mid-July.

Chris Connors Wins Edward A. Powers Memorial Trophy at 2012 Fort Lauderdale to Key West Race - by Nathan Adamus

Congratulations to Annapolis Yacht Club member Chris Connors who won the Edward A. Powers Memorial Trophy at the 2012 Fort Lauderdale to Key West Race held January 11 - January 13. The Edward A. Powers Memorial Trophy is presented to the navigator of the first IRC boat (corrected) to finish. Chris navigated aboard Sarah, an X-41 owned by Greg Manning from Warwick, RI. Chris was also the the navigator when Sarah finished 2nd overall in the 2010 Newport to Bermuda race.

Champions Crowned in Ten Olympic Classes; Farrah Hall Takes Silver - by AYC Broadcast

Farrah Hall (Annapolis, Md., USA), AYC Foundation recipient, won the silver medal at Rolex Miami OCR (racing ended Saturday, Jan. 28) in RS:X Women (windsurfing). Established in 1990, the annual Rolex Miami OCR, organized by US Sailing, is sailed on Biscayne Bay, from January 23-January 28, and features elite-level competition in the classes selected for the Olympic and Paralympic Games. This year, there were 529 sailors representing 41 countries competing.

The Story of the Salty Sisters - by National Sailing Hall of Fame

In the fall of 1951, a group of 10 women, all wives of St. Petersburg Yacht Club members, formed a new sailing group at SPYC known as the Salty Sisters. First sailing in 8-foot Hagerty Sea Shell prams (later replaced by Clearwater Optimist prams), as well as in Fish Class and later Rhodes 19 sloops, the Salty Sisters are a competitive and successful group of women sailors. Their success became so widespread that the original group of 10 members quickly grew to 150, and inspired women from neighboring clubs to organize similar groups. Juniors Fine-tune Strategies at Orange Bowl Regatta - by Steven Barbano

The 2011 Orange Bowl Regatta, hosted by Coral Reef Yacht Club, Biscayne Bay Yacht Club, and the United States Sailing Center of Miami, is the biggest youth regatta in the United States running. The event took place from December 27th to the 30th. Of the 27 sailors flying the Annapolis Yacht Club flag for this regatta, 5 were part of the RWB Opti Team.

Orange Bowl Regatta Ends with a Blizzard - by Coral Reef Yacht Club

South Florida may not have snowstorms but the white sails on Biscayne Bay looked like a blizzard of boats on the bay. Today was the final day of racing for Miami’s 2011 Orange Bowl International Youth Regatta. There were 559 sailors completing four days of sunshine, sailing, swimming in the pool and social activities. In addition to sailing, there were card games going on in the Club house, kids playing catch with their Orange Bowl rubber balls on the lawn and coaches talking to their teams surrounded by parents and siblings.

Faith Goldstein, spouse of member Jesse Cunitz, describes their recent journey to the Exumas and her entry into the sailing world.

"Obviously I am not a sailor. I am a passenger. I still don't know which sail is which. I do understand you don't want to, and can't sail, into the wind. I also know that the majority of times you attempt to sail that the wind is the wrong direction, or not there, or too strong, or it's raining. It's a challenge just to have the perfect sail, but I do love reading the books that tell about the little places along the way, discovering the perfect bay for the best snorkeling, attempting to catch a fish for dinner, and the shops full of the same old crafts."

Chicago Sailors Honored with US SAILING Rescue Medal - by AYC Broadcast

US Sailing will award a Hanson Rescue Medal to sailors Mary Kovats, Jacob Karlin and Dave Stix of Chicago, Ill. for the bravery they displayed during their rescue of three distressed sailors from the cold, stormy waters of Lake Michigan on May 7, 2011. Commodore Torgerson's Dragon Sails South - by Ward Anderson

Bill and Maureen Torgerson cruised and raced Dragon, their Little Harbor 53, along the East Coast last summer, all the while making mental notes for a long Fall cruise to the Caribbean where Dragon would spend the winter. With preparations complete, on Tuesday, November 8, the morning after the AYC Annual Meeting, Dragon set sail from Aberdeen Creek to the British Virgin Islands. Commodore Bill Torgerson, P/C Karl Von Schwarz, Charlie Bennett, Theo Peterson and Ward Anderson stowed fenders and lines and began our watches.

Navy Crew Hits Peak at Kennedy Cup Regatta - by Bill Wagner

Naval Academy offshore sailing coach Jahn Tihansky had a difficult decision to make last week. Tihansky thought he had three well-trained crews capable of capturing the prestigious John F. Kennedy Cup Regatta. However, he could only choose one and wound up going with senior skipper Dillon Rossiter's team of eight midshipmen. It proved a wise decision as Rossiter and company sailed brilliantly from start to finish in winning the Kennedy Cup in resounding fashion.

J/22 East Coasts Whipped by HOT TODDYs - by J/Boats

A wild and windy day on Saturday prompted both the J/22 and J/80 fleets to call for cancellation of racing in their respective East Coast Championships. The prognosis Saturday was pretty dire, so most of the fleet retired to the BBQ at EYC, or the Boatyard Bar & Grille, or to McGarvey's to watch college football on TV, while still others rambled on over to the Annapolis YC and downtown on Saturday.

J/122 CATAPULT Trumps IRC East Coasts - by J/Boats

It was a weekend to remember for the proud members of the Annapolis YC. Seemingly everything came up spades in the cards that were dealt to them, with AYC members in some capacity leading home all three fleets in the Storm Trysail Club sponsored IRC East Coasts/ Mid-Atlantics sailed on the Chesapeake Bay in mid-October.

MYSTERY MACHINE Eclipses J/105 East Coasts - by J/Boats

The East Coast Championship and the Chesapeake Bay Championship were combined for the fleet of eighteen J/105s that participated this year, including sailors from the extreme far north of the Canadian border (Toronto). Extreme and unusual weather resulted in a Friday cancellation of Saturday's racing as high winds, extreme low temperatures, and wind driven wintery mix brought a halt to championship weekend on the Bay.

Wehrheim Snags J/24 East Coasts - by J/Boats

For starters, PRO Mike Waters did one helluva job to get 55 boats off the line over the three days to get in five reasonably good races for the Hillman Capital Management J/24 East Coast Championships. Hosted by Severn Sailing, this regatta marked one of the last events in the 2011 sailing calendar that enabled ANY J/24 team to "qualify" to sail in the 2012 J/24 World Championships in Rochester, NY-- basically, all you had to do was register, pay the fees and go sailing.

Blind Sailor Awarded Gay S. Lynn Memorial Trophy - by US SAILING

Matt Chao was honored last Saturday night at the Annapolis Yacht Club with the Gay S. Lynn Memorial Trophy, which recognizes outstanding service, over a significant period of time to disabled sailing and disabled sailors in the U.S. Despite being visually impaired since infancy, Chao has embraced sailing at an early age. Matt has been an innovator in disabled sailing and a role model for all sailors.

Local Windsurfer Eyes Olympic Berth - by Bill Wagner

Arnold resident Geoff Becker was a member of the U.S. team that captured the silver medal in J/24 class at the Pan American games. Becker, former junior program director at Annapolis Yacht Club, crewed for skipper John Mollicone, who won the series, but placed fifth in the medal race and finished a point behind the Brazilian team skippered by Mauricio Oliveira.

Admiral Holloway Receives Dewey Award from Naval Order - by Naval Historical Foundation

On Saturday, 22 October, the Naval Order of the United States (NOUS) held its annual Dewey Luncheon in which Admiral James L. Holloway, III, USN (Ret.) – former Chief of Naval Operations, and Chairman Emeritus of the Naval Historical Foundation – was recognized as the 2011 recipient of the George Dewey Award. He was a member of the New York Yacht Club, The Annapolis Yacht Club, The Brook Club of New York City, the Maryland Club of Baltimore, and the Metropolitan Club of Washington, DC, where he served as President in 1982.

Tihansky Named U.S. SAILING's National Sailor of the Week - by Navy Offshore

The U.S. Naval Academy Squadron in Annapolis, Md. are the proud hosts of the U.S. Offshore Sailing Championship, a US SAILING National Championship event that took place in September on Chesapeake Bay in Navy 44 sloops. Jahn Tihansky, AYC member and the Director of the Offshore Sailing Team at the U.S. Naval Academy, served as the Event Chairman. Tihansky has served in this role since 2005, when he became head coach of the sailing team. For his efforts in organizing and running the event, Tihansky was selected as US SAILING's National Sailor of the Week.

Annapolis Yacht Club Wins 2011 Corinthian Cup - by AYC Broadcast

AYC took full advantage of a calm weekend on their home waters to claim the 2011 Corinthian Cup. The Adult team went 4 and 0 against San Francisco, with the Juniors splitting all 4 races with SFYC. In order to break the tie, the winner of the last race was deemed the overall winner. However, in a gesture of good sportsmanship, both Junior teams were awarded commemorative bracelets.

There were 36 all-women teams participating from the Netherlands, Great Britain, Canada and 16 US states with sailors ranging from ages 11 to 65. What a difference a day makes! We had a great day today with a 6, 1, 3. Moving us to 3rd overall. The first race was a start down by the pin following their game plan, unfortunately the current had not switched yet and we were forced to “win your side” in college racing this is a mantra that you live by, if you win your side you are normally in the top 6 we rounded 7 very close to 6 and passed him downwind.

"We were probably the biggest movers,” said Peter McChesney, helm for the Annapolis Yacht Club team who has only sailed in Newport a handful of times previously, including the the New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup U.S. Qualifying Series in 2010 in which the AYC team finished second to earn the opportunity to race in this event. AYC was 10th overall after yesterday’s first day of racing, and moved up to third overall with 43 points after finishes of 6-1-3 today.

We had a so so first day, winning the first start then not sticking to the game plan and heading left cost us the first race. Inches make the difference here and had we stepped up to the right early we would have rounded ahead of the Japanese who rounded first and were able to win race one. In fact, we were the ones who sent them to the right side of the course by sailing higher and a little faster causing them to tack.

Due to the opening of a large number of bays on the Conowingo Dam and the extremely high water level of the Susquehanna River post Hurricane Irene and the rain courtesy of Tropical Storm Lee, there is an enormous amount of debris floating in the Annapolis area including the harbor. The water surrounding the Club is full of large branches, debris, and other floating materials that can cause damage to boats and boaters. Please be cautious when moving through the water at any speed and take care to avoid collisions with both the items you can see and those that are just below the surface.

After enduring yesterday’s high wind survival conditions, the hundreds of sailors on 81 teams at the 47th annual Rolex Big Boat Series would no doubt agree that handling today’s 14-17 knots on San Francisco Bay was a piece of cake. And rich was the cake’s icing: sunshine unobstructed by fog, with temperatures that had warmed by double digits to 68 degrees.

Short Tacks: Corinthian Cup; Peter Sulick takes third at Etchells class Atlantic Coast Championships - by The Capital

Annapolis Yacht Club will attempt to wrest away the trophy when it hosts the second Corinthian Cup the weekend of Sept. 24-25 using donated J/22 sloops. Youth teams have been added for both clubs, bringing the fleet to four total boats. Addition of a team racing component is being considered.

Day 4 US SAILING Youth Championships - by Jay Kehoe

What a week of tricky sailing! If you loko at the score card, there have been many ups and downs for every sailor, except as in most cases, the winner. Pat and Harrison had a great day today - earning a 6 in the first race. Right before the start, I let them know that they should look upwind before the start at around 2 minutes. They listened and saw the big, black puff coming down from the left, with a midline start that allowed them to go straight on Starboard and they were vaulted in the top ten.

Ted Turner Named Sailing Hall of Fame Inductee - by AYC Broadcast

CNN founder and AYC member Ted Turner will join Gary Jobson as part of the first class of inductees into the National Sailing Hall of Fame. Turner, 72, former owner of the Braves and Hawks, captured the America’s Cup in 1977, sweeping Australia 4-0. “Captain Outrageous,” as he was dubbed, was named Yachtsman of the Year four times.

Hull and Team Assignments for NYYC Invitational Cup 2011 Finalized at Live Lottery Drawing - by AYC Broadcast

At the conclusion of the awards for the Swan 42 U.S. Nationals last Sunday, a live lottery drawing was held to match Swan 42 U.S. hulls with competing teams from around the world.

While some Swan 42 owners have engaged in private charters, other will be sailing their own boats representing their clubs. Gary Jobson and Norwood Davis’s “Mustang” will be sailed by Annapolis Yacht Club who recently used the NYYC 157th Annual Regatta and the U.S. Nationals as practice opportunities.

Glorious Conditions Hit Solomons Island Racers - by Nancy Noyes

It was a perfect night for a sail down the bay. Bright moonlight flooded the sky and water, and a fairly steady southerly breeze at 10 to 15 knots sped the fleet of 119 starters on their way from the Severn to the Patuxent in the 31st Annual Solomons Island Invitational Race.

Swan 42 Nationals Results - by AYC Broadcast

As Sunday dawned a full 18 points separated Ken Colburn and Apparition from Phil Lotz and Arethusa at the Swan 42 US Nationals, sailed July 14-17 at the New York Yacht Club’s Harbour Court. Then spoke Arethusa. Phil Lotz’s Arethusa won the last two races today and clearly won the final day with a 6-1-1 finish. That left him tied after 11 races at 62 points with Ken Colburn and Apparition, the series leader.

The results on the water weren't very satisfying, but the results ashore, in terms of dollars raised to help find cures for blood-related cancers, were just fine in Saturday's 19th Annual Annapolis Leukemia Cup Regatta, hosted by Eastport Yacht Club with support from Annapolis Yacht Club. More important than prizes for racing, however, was the recognition of the event's most successful fund raisers. This year, for the third time in a row, the Leukemia Cup went to AYC member Tate Russack and his team as the top fundraisers at the event.

When 16 nations from six different continents hit the waves off Newport, R.I., for the New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup presented by Rolex on 10-17 September, most of the 22 participating yacht clubs will have traveled extraordinary distances in order to compete. Itchenor Sailing Club (GBR), Royal Bermuda Yacht Club (BER) and Yacht Club Capri (ITA), however, may have an edge coming from their own island locales to New York Yacht Club’s home on Aquidneck Island, the largest island in Narragansett Bay.

Actaea Performance Earns Prestigious Scott Trophy - by Bill Wagner

Michael and Connie Cone became enamored with offshore sailing in 1995 after buying a Bermuda 40-footer. The Philadelphia couple competed in the 1996 Newport-to-Bermuda Race aboard Actaea and were hooked. New York Yacht Club 157th Annual Regatta Presented by Rolex Biggest and Best Ever - by AYC Broadcast

With 135 boats competing, the New York Yacht Club’s 157th Annual Regatta presented by Rolex, held June 10-12, broke all of its past attendance records, and with winds whipping into the high teens for buoy racing over the weekend, it certainly is in line for being the most memorable Annual Regatta in recent history.

Members who participated included: David & Sandra Askew – IRC 2 class (8 boats) 1st place, Bruce Bingman & Taran Teague – PHRF 1 class (8 boats) 2nd place, Ed & Molly Freitag – IRC 4 class (15 boats) 1st place, Bill Sweetser – IRC 6 class (10 boats) 2nd place.

Jay Kehoe is recognized by those who know him for his energy, humor, teaching skills and work ethic as a coach. For the past two years he has served as Annapolis Yacht Club’s Waterfront Director, transforming the marina and junior sailing programs into models for other clubs across the country. Michael Carr, Jack and Austin Ortel Win Sportsmanship Award - by AYC Broadcast

The undefeated team from SDYC will go to their third Governor’s Cup Challenge in July due to their first place finish in the second Annual Youth Clinic & Regatta. The racing culminated in an awards ceremony on the flag deck at BYC. The Nick Scandone Sportsmanship/Leadership Memorial Trophy was presented by Nick’s wife, Mary Kate Scandone to the Annapolis Yacht Club team, as the racers that most epitomizes Nick’s memory. In 2010, they were also honored with the prestigious award.

AYC Members Sail Strong at NOOD Regatta - by AYC Broadcast

Bill Sweetser guided Rush to a first place finish in four of eight races, and led at the end of each day's racing in capturing the J/109 Mid-Atlantic Championship for the third straight year. Several other members sailed to victory. Peter Scheidt and his family-based team aboard Maggie put forth an impressive performance to rally for victory in J/35 class. Cedric Lewis and Frederik Salvesen led Mirage to first or second place finishes in four of eight races, scoring 29 points, two better than Peter McChesney and The Mystery Machine crew.

Annapolis resident and sailing legend Gary Jobson turned in a dominant effort in winning the Etchells class by a wide margin. Other local winners included Rod Jabin (Ramrod, Farr 40), Tony Parker (Bangor Packet, J/24), Tim Bloomfield (White Cap, Cal 25) and brothers-in-law Bob Rutsch and Mike Costello (Bebop, J/30).

Annapolis High Qualifies for Baker Team Race National Championship - by AYC Broadcast

Annapolis High School is the only team in the Mid Atlantic District to qualify for both the Fleet race Nationals and the Team Race Nationals. Much credit goes to the coaching staff of Melissa Pumphrey and Dan Ryan as well as Senior Captain Jack Ortel. Sailors on the team include Charlie Lomax, Harrison Hawk, Haines Whitacher, Lili Salvesen, Austin Ortel, Ali Mac Donald, Caitlyn Oakes, Richard Karsten. "These athletes sailed an impressive series and having it come down to a do-or-die scenario on the last race made them really show their mettle," said Jay Kehoe.

Jeff Todd wins J/22 Midwinters in Tiebreaker - by AYC Broadcast

Jeff Todd (Annapolis, MD) and crew, including local sailor and AYC member Chip Carr, narrowly won the Layline J/22 Midwinter Championship in a tie-breaker over Chris Doyle of Kenmore, NY. Seven teams had a strong chance to win the event going into the ninth and final race, and in the end only eight points separated the top seven finishers.

On February 5th off of Ft Lauderdale James Muldoon's 72 foot Custom yacht hit the starting line at full speed and began what would be a very interesting and testing Pineapple Cup Race to Montego Bay, Jamaica. This is one of the great ocean races taking the fleet across the Gulf Stream to Great Isaacs and down through the Bahamas through the Windward Passage around the tip of Cuba and straight to Montego Bay.

Rolex Farr 40 Worlds - Steve and Maxine Phillips Head Down Under - by Rolex Farr 40

Steve and Maxine Phillips, from Annapolis, Maryland, on Le Renard, have not competed at the Worlds since Copenhagen in 2006, but prior to that they were on a roll, starting with the 2002 Worlds in Nassau, Bahamas, which they won, and then racing in the 2003, 2004, and 2006 events. Having missed out the 2005 Worlds in Sydney, what has enticed them Down Under this time? Steve Phillips admits, “during my last trip to Sydney, after several bottles of the best Australian wines that Max and I have ever enjoyed, Lang Walker (of the Farr 40 Kokomo) talked me into chartering his second boat. It was not really a difficult decision, as Sydney is one of the greatest cities and sailing venues in the world.”

AYC Members Make US Sailing Team AlphaGraphics 2011

Bryan Boyd (spouse of member Elizabeth Foscue), John von Schwarz (son of P/C Karl von Schwarz and previous AYC Junior Sailing Coach), and Ian Coleman (son of member Rod Coleman) who is sailing the Star with previous Olympian Andrew Campbell, have all been named to the 2011 US Sailing Team AlphaGraphics. This team is the last team prior to the Olympic team to compete at the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Weymouth/Portland England. The US Sailing Team AlphaGraphics (USSTAG) is managed by the United States Sailing Association (US SAILING), the national governing body for the sport of sailing and sailboat racing, and the Olympic Sailing Committee (OSC). The top-ranked boats in each Olympic and Paralympic class are selected annually to be members of the US Sailing Team AlphaGraphics.

US SAILING Recognizes Wayne Bretsch and Jim Muldoon at Annual Meeting - by Jake Fish

Several noteworthy sailing contributors were presented with US SAILING's highest honors during Friday night's Annual Meeting Awards Dinner at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Phoenix. US SAILING presented three esteemed awards to those who made extraordinary achievements in the areas of sailing education and race management. Aruthur Wullschleger received the Harman Hawkins Trophy for his outstanding contributions to the sport of sailing in the field of race administration. Jim Muldoon recieved the Timothea Larr Trophy for the vision and guidance he has provided to the advancement of sailor education in the United States. The Rochester Yacht Club earned the St. Petersburg Yacht Club for its outstanding organization and execution of the Hospice Regattas National Championship held in June of 2010.

Abby Sunderland, the young woman who recently attempted to sail solo around the world in her Open 40 Wild Eyes, will be at the Annapolis Yacht Club to meet members and share stories of her historic journey. Abby will be visiting the clubhouse between 11 AM and 2 PM. Please come down, grab a bite to eat, and meet Abby.

Muldoon Honored with Herreshoff Trophy at US SAILING's Annual Meeting - by AYC Broadcast

US SAILING, the National Governing Body of the sport, has awarded its prestigious Nathanael G. Herreshoff Trophy to Jim Muldoon for his outstanding contributions to the sport of sailing in the U.S. over many years. Muldoon, a former president of US SAILING, has been a strong advocate of community sailing programs at the grass roots level, especially in the areas of youth sailing, training, and safety. He received the award Thursday night at US SAILING's Annual Meeting at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Phoenix.

After 2 days of incredibly tight races … and I mean tight … we have qualified to go into the championship round and begin the game again from scratch! It was a dicey day on the water with a NW breeze and a very big outgoing current (the water is 3-5 feet above normal). Even in the face of these challenges, we managed to rise to the occasion. Again it was great to have the Burgee up high on the flag staff at NYYC.

Torgerson, Torgerson, and Michaelson Win First Annual Golf Tournament - by Becky Kleinfelter

The first Annual AYC Golf Tournament was held on Sept. 25 at Hunter’s Oak Golf Club in Queenstown, Md. There were 29 players, all of which had a wonderful time and hope that this will become a yearly event.

The traditional Annual Dinner for the Cruising Fleet was held on Friday Nov. 6. The weather was warm enough to allow the buffet to be set up on the deck of the Skipjack and to add extra tables to accommodate the entire waiting list. Some 115 Cruising Fleet members dined on a sumptuous spread of the finest food in Annapolis.

Prepare to be challenged: The Art Between the Creeks artists announce their spring 2008 show, Other…, to be held May 30-June 1. The spring show will feature the work of 19 local artists, including three who are new to the group. While some of the work is traditional, the artists in this group consider themselves different from the mainstream, or Main Street, art scene in Annapolis. They seek to challenge themselves, their audience, and other artists with their eclectic work.

CBYRA Recognizes AYC Race Committee as “2007 Race Committee of the Year” - by Sandy Sloan

CBYRA held their 2007 annual awards ceremony on Feb. 2 at the Gibson Island Yacht Club. Awards were presented to skippers in PHRF and one-design classes as well as to members of the junior sailing community. In addition to the individual awards that were presented, CBYRA’s Board awarded the Clyde Winters Award for Race Committee of the Year to the Annapolis Yacht Club for its hosting of the 2007 J/105 North American Championship.

Optimist Team Trials to Descend on AYC - by Molly Hughes Wilmer, Regatta Chair

The most competitive annual regatta for the United States Optimist Dinghy Association (USODA) will be hosted by AYC from May 1 through 4. Almost 200 sailors and their parents and coaches will be launching out of the Sailing Center and sailing off Greenberry Point.

Junior Fleet: AYC 420 Race Team Shines at Orange Bowl - by Michael Hennon

The AYC 420 race team posted impressive results at this year’s Orange Bowl Regatta at the Coral Reef Yacht Club, Dec. 26 through 30. Four AYC teams traveled to Florida to compete in one of the premier youth regattas in the country. This year’s field saw a fleet of 88 boats from Brazil and all over the United States.
