Icebreaker Signals Start of Spectacular 2009 Cruising Season
by Tom Corboy, Chair
Icebreaker Mixes a Lot of Fun with a Little Education
Our cruising season began in May with our traditional opening rendezvous, the Icebreaker, at AYC on Mother’s Day weekend. Howard Brooks ably led an Icebreaker team in planning and conducting the weekend festivities. This was followed by a Memorial Day cruise to local creeks, rendezvousing at the homes of David and Nancy Dabney on Spa Creek and John and Marge Chehansky on Clements Creek. May closed with the Eagle’s Nest Rendezvous near Gibson Island, once again led by Frank and Jeannie Wagner.
The Icebreaker attracted 22 boats, most of which were docked at the Yacht Basin Company adjacent to AYC. Delicious dinners were attended by 90 to 100 revelers on Friday and Saturday evenings, with dancing until the closing bell on Saturday. A very professional American Red Cross certification course was conducted on Saturday covering CPR and First Aid.
Double Your Pleasure This Summer with Two Big Tent Events and Two Inner Harbor Cruises
The first of two summer “big tent” events, the Newcomers’ Cruise, will be held at the home of Jim and Ellen Rogers in Galesville on the weekend of June 12 through 14. Father’s Day weekend features a cruise to St. Michael’s during the Classic Boat Show at the Maritime Museum. And the month of June closes out with a three night cruise to the Mid-Chesapeake Bay, featuring overnights at Knapp’s Narrows, an anchorage on the Little Choptank, and a night at Chesapeake Yacht Club on the West River.
The Fourth of July will be celebrated with a planned cruise to Baltimore’s Inner Harbor to enjoy the weekend festivities and fireworks. There will be a second weekend at Baltimore’s Inner Harbor when the Orioles will be playing at Camden Yards, as well as several other weekend cruises. The full season schedule is posted on the AYC website under the dropdown menus at Cruising and Schedule. Details of each of the individual cruises, along with the procedure for sign-up, are also available on the Cruising Schedule page of the website.
The Cruising Fleet publishes CruiseGrams via the internet and maintains its own email list. Please notify tomcorboy@aol.com if you would like to be added to the list. And, to keep the CruiseGrams coming, let him know when you make an email address change - the list is not automatically updated when you make a change with AYC. |
