Commodore's Message

Happy New Year!

by Commodore William T. Torgerson

It is an honor to have been elected to represent the membership as Commodore.

Our club is in great shape. Member satisfaction is high; our finances are solid; we have a skilled and attentive management and staff; and hundreds of member volunteers support the Club in a myriad of ways. We thank our outgoing leaders for their role in bringing these things to pass. Our continuing and new leaders are committed to doing our best to sustain and build upon this excellent foundation.

A New Year Brings a Revived Smoking Lamp

You may notice that this letter comes in a new package, namely a revived Smoking Lamp. It will come with your monthly statement and will contain this letter, a calendar, information on upcoming events, and whatever other topical information we can fit into eight pages. Our website (www.annapolisyc.org) will continue to provide a wealth of additional information for those inclined to dig a little deeper and email blasts will keep things up to date as needed. We are always on the lookout for ways to improve communications, so if you have a suggestion, we’d love to hear it. You can contact management, any Board member, or the Communications Committee.

Past Progress on Infrastructure Development Continues with Future Planning

Over the past few years, great progress has been made in bringing our capital infrastructure up to date. These efforts will continue going forward. By the time you read this, we should be well along into a two month project which will replace our aging second deck exterior planking and make the ceiling over the first deck exterior waterproof. This will allow the Skipjack to accommodate larger member events regardless of inclement weather and is by far the most cost-effective way to expand our available space. While the current economic situation is a trial to us all, one positive consequence of it is that the bids to do this work came in significantly below the $320,000 we had budgeted for it.

Our Long Range Planning Committee has been hard at work looking to the future. They are currently putting the final touches on a robust planning process which will be used to ensure that proposed projects are thoroughly vetted for conformity with the Club’s mission, vision, and goals and objectives, and are within our financial capabilities. Timely and thorough communication with the membership will be key elements of this process. The entire process will be posted on our website, probably by the end of January. It will then be used to produce a new long range plan over the next year or so.

That’s it for this month. Best regards,

Bill Torgerson
