
SummerThe summer program consists of instruction, practice, and competition for all ages and experience levels of junior sailors. These programs are presented in Opti's, the Club's intercollegiate 420's, and the Club's new 29er's.
420 ProgramThe 420 is a manageable 2 person boat for sailors coming out of the Opti class and enables young sailors to learn teamwork, trapeze, and spinnaker techniques. The 420 is simple and safe for beginning sailors and yet quick enough to keep collegiate All-Americans interested. The 420 is best suited for sailors 13 - 18 and over 100 pounds. BEGINNER 420 Course will include basics of rigging a boat, sailing fundamentals, basic boat handling, seamanship (knot’s, weather, etc.), water safety and sportsmanship. Classes are from 9:00 am - 12:00 pm. Ages: 12 - 18. Prerequisite: none. Non-member: $470 Member: $370 (Does not include multiple session discounts) INTERMEDIATE 420 Course is designed for sailors who have completed the beginner-level course and will focus on advanced boat handling skills. Classes are from 1:00 - 4:30 pm. Ages: 12 - 18. Prerequisite: Two sessions Beginner 420. Non-member: $490 Member: $390 (Does not include multiple session discount) 420 DEVELOPMENT TEAMA new program for 2008, this class is designed to facilitate the transition from Optimists to 420 Racing. The focus of this class will be on intro to 420 racing themes. Sailors will travel to local events. Practice will run from 1:00- 4:30 pm. Non-member: $915 Member: $730 (Does not include mulitple session discount) 420 RACE TEAM The 420 race team will be cross train with 29ers this summer. Sailors will travel on the Chesapeake Bay and nationally to major events such as Buzzards Bay, NAs etc. Practice will run from 11:00 am - 4:30 pm. Optimist ProgramThe best way to introduce young children to sailing is through the Optimist Class. AYC Jr. Sailing takes pride in its high ratio of professional instructors to sailors, ensuring a high level of individual attention when young sailors need it the most.
CREEK CRITTERS
This is new program is for children ages five and six. This class is for your youngest to get their first experience with water and boats. It is a five-day class with seven sessions. Classes are from 9:30 - 11:30 am. Ages: 5 - 6 SEA SQUIRTS
Based on popular demand AYC offers an expanded program this summer. This “Fun with Boats” course is a fun opportunity for younger children to enjoy time on the water and learn the basics of sailing. This course is now offered Monday – Friday 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. for all 4 sessions. Sign up early! Ages: 7 - 8. Prerequisite: none. Prerequisite: Two sessions Beginner Opti. Non-member: $490 Member: $390 (Does not include multiple session discount) GREEN FLEET RACE OPTI This course requires a solid understanding of sailing and provides a racing experience that focuses on participation and fun. Sailors will represent AC in local regattas. Practice is from 1:00 - 4:30 pm. This class is offered half summer (2 sessions) or full summer (4 sessions). Ages: 8 - 13. Prerequisite: Boat ownership. Non-member: $915 Member: $730 (Does not include mulitple session discount) OPTI RACE TEAM Sailors will travel to regattas on the Chesapeake Bay and beyond including major USODA events. Safety & Discipline All participants in the program must pass a simple swim test given on the first day of instruction. Also, at all times while on the water, each sailor must provide and wear an approved personal flotation device (PFD). Shoes with positive closure on the toes must be worn at all times (no sandals no exceptions). Parents are expected to inform their children that proper self discipline is required while in the program. All sailors and parents will sign a Code of Conduct. Violations of safety or other program rules may result in disciplinary action including suspension or dismissal from the program without a refund. AYC is committed to maintaining a safe and positive environment for young people. Parent InvolvementParental involvement is important to make the Junior Sailing program and the related sailing and social events a success. Please sign up to help when you attend the Kick-Off Orientation! Boat OwnershipBoat ownership is required for Green Fleet, Opti Race Team, and 420 Race Team. 420 Charter boats are available. Use of the 29ers will require a damage deposit. DiscountsThere is a 10% discount for each additional child from the same family. This discount applies to the least expensive enrollment. A separate Application and Medical Waiver is required for each child enrolled. Refund PolicyAYC will refund the full registration fee until April 19, 2009. After this date no refunds will be granted. Late FeeApplications received after April 20th will be subject to a $50.00 late fee. |
