Full Fall Season RWB or
For those of you that are registered for the Full Fall
Season RWB or Green, as coaches we will assume that your sailor will be
attending every practice both weekday and weekends. If your sailor is not going
to be at practice, please email us to let us know. Assuming that those
registered for the full season for practices, we will use that number as our
base count for the number of coaches needed each practice for both teams.
Per Diem Fall Season
RWB or Green Fleet:
those registered as Per Diem RWB or Green, you are required
to sign-up for each practice 72 hours in advance of each practice. Each
week, you will receive an email and you will have to respond/RSVP to which
practices you will be attending. If no RSVP is received for the practice, we will
assume that your sailor will not be attending and we will plan according to the
number of sailors that have responded.
If you RSVP to a practice and do not show, you will still
be charged if the need to hire an additional coach for that practice was
planned based on the total number with your sailor attending. This is a
policy that we will hold to so that we are not over scheduling additional
coaches and/or not scheduling enough coaches for all of the sailors. Scheduling
additional coaches for each practice takes advance notice to the coach and is
based on their availability, and last minute planning does not ensure we will
be able to schedule an additional coach.
If no RSVP is received and your sailor shows up to
practice and pushes the AYC Sailor to Coach Ratio (8:1) over and we do not have
a second coach on site, I am very sorry but your sailor will not be able to
Safety is AYC’s first priority and with your help in planning and
communicating to the Junior Fleet staff this will ensure that we are following
RSVPs must be indicated through the online RSVP or in an email to the Junior
Fleet staff at firstname.lastname@example.org
. Verbal RSVPs told to coaches maybe forgotten and we would like to have a
record of indicated attendance for each practice.

Our New, Expanded Program
A year-round program with a full-time, dedicated coach allows AYC to help with the critical transition of sailors as they progress through different levels of sailing and racing to become true athletes of the sport. Expanding off of our summer program, AYC hosts practices in the Fall and Spring, and sends teams and coaches to all major regattas. In addition to allowing for more time on the water Fall and Spring programs also allows for sailors to practice in wider array of conditions than we typically see in the summer, as well as retain and continue to develop skills they have worked on throughout the year. Additionally, athletes get a lot of focused time training on the water for larger regattas and events. Finally, athletes have the option of traveling with AYC to high level events in more southern states over the course of the winter, as well. This way, our young sailors are able to retain their skills and knowledge in a true, year-round fashion.
Instruction from Beginner Sailors to Advanced Athletes
The AYC Optimist program is designed to provide a continuum of training to allow participants to develop through our Learn-To-Sail (LTS) program, including the Creek Critter and Sea Squirt courses for 5-8 year-old's, and the Beginner and Intermediate Optimist courses for those seeking to progress their skills in the Optimist class. From there, our Optimist program moves sailors up towards the learn-to-race Green Fleet, where first year racers learn the skills necessary to participate on a race course and begin competition at local regattas and events. Finally, young sailors develop their skills necessary to become athletes on the Red, White, and Blue (RWB) Racing Team. With both local and travel events at this level, athletes see progression towards levels attained only by the best athletes in the sport. Along the way, the program is designed to promote sportsmanship and fair sailing, ensuring that sailors are enjoying their time on the water and challenging each sailor to progress as far as their drive and ability can take them.
The team typically participates in several events each season including, but not limited to, the USODA National Championships, USODA New England Championships, CORK Intrenational Optimist Regatta, and New Jersey State Championships over the Summer; USODA Southeast Championships, AYC's Halloween Howl, USODA Atlantic Coast Championships, and USODA Midwinters in the Fall; Orange Bowl Intrenational Youth Regatta, Boomerang Regatta, USODA Valentine’s Day, USODA Sunshine State Championships, and USODA Gulf Coast Championships in the winter. All of these events help to gear up our young athletes towards performing well at the US National Team Trials held each Spring. Travel regatta signups for RWB Team are located on the Junior Fleet - Calendar page of our website. Just click on event in order to sign your sailor up to sail the event with AYC Race Team. Signups for regattas must be completed at least 28 days prior to the start of an event in order to secure a spot. Any additions or cancellations after this time are not guaranteed and can result in athletes being charged for the regatta fees for which they signed up.
