Live Drill for Junior Sailing Programs
Bri Grenier, Junior Fleet Director
Thursday June 13th was a very exciting day for the AYC Junior Fleet! In
coordination with SSA, EYC, Annapolis Fire Department, Annapolis Harbormaster,
and the Department of Natural Resources, our Junior Fleet staff worked together on a
“Live Emergency Drill”. This drill entailed different emergency scenarios that
these coaches might be faced with throughout the summer. Fostering a great relationship between emergency services and other sailing programs has always been important to the AYC Junior Fleet and having the opportunity to come together for something like this was an exciting accomplishment.
Using many different boats from each program, Instructors and Coaches got the chance to recover boats that some of them had never worked with before. This exercise will prove useful for assisting each other in an emergency situation when all Junior Programs need to work together for the safety of all junior sailors. Capsize recovery, boat breakdowns, lightning emergency drills, on the water behavior management and helping a conscious and unconscious body out of the water were some of the skills that all three programs got to practice with their program directors, head instructors and staff.

The staff also got a chance to learn how to assist the fire department if there's a need for a stretcher basket in the water to recover a person with a neck or back injury. By learning how to handle these different scenarios, the coaches are now equipped with the skills to safely handle difficult situations. This activity was the first of its kind and will immensely benefit the coaches and their levels of preparedness for many summers to come.

Big thanks to those who were involved and made this educational drill possible.
