Junior Fleet Staff

Laser Race Team

The SSA Sandy McVicker regatta was a lot of fun for laser sailors James Golden, Alex Adams, Cole Canuel, and Jon Jon Weed. In some challenging conditions and courses, the four learned a lot and had a great day. James won the standard Laser fleet! In the radial fleet, Alex placed 5th, Jon Jon placed 11th, and Cole placed 23rd.

AYC laser sailors showed a lot of improvements at the AYC Junior Annual Regatta, and they had a lot of fun. We experienced a lot of different conditions, and ended the day with some breezy conditions perfect for laser sailing! James won the standard Laser fleet again, and Alex placed 4th in the laser radials, followed by Cole in 10th and Jon Jon in 14th.

Opti Race Teams
This year's Annapolis Junior Annual Regatta came with steady surprises, important lessons, and unseasonably great wind. SSA's Sandy McVicker Regatta saw strong Easterly clocking with steady oscillations and slight chop. The AYC team focused on starting technique and upwind boat speed. Our sailors met performance and learning goals, but there still exist some important hurdles to jump before this progress is reflected on the podium.

AYC hosted the following day's racing, which brought consistent left clocks and a steadily building breeze. The upwind legs proved challenging with surprise puffs at off angles, but by the end of racing, AYC's sailors learned to keep their heads on a swivel. Every AYC sailor gained ground on downwind legs by catching some steep waves and staying upright. In all, the week earned AYC valuable learning experience, and invaluable smiles.

420 Race Teams
This past week, the Annapolis Yacht Club Chesapeake 420 team competed in the  Sandy McVicker Jr. Regatta and AYC Junior Annual Regatta. We had a strong 11 boats representing the team with great racing on both days and a lot of good learning experiences for all of our sailors. Conditions were light and shifty with lots of powerboat wake at the SSA Sandy McVicker with five races completed. Andrew Tollefson and Ryan Tatelbaum were the top Chessy finishers, placing 14th out of 33 boats. Blake Vogel and Raam Fox were close behind in 15th, and Max Penders and Finley Heflin in 17th.

The Annapolis Yacht Club 420 Race Team had an excellent time at the Sandy McVicker and AYC Annual Regattas last week. Monday for the Sandy McVicker was a tough day on the water for both the sailors and the race committee. We had a light and shifty easterly on Monday, but the race committee managed to get the full schedule of five races off, and the AYC team overcame the conditions and sailed a successful event. Zander King and Rees Tindall won the event, closely followed by Matt Buddington and Linnea Forsberg. Chase Conway and Hayden Lamb finished fifth. The rest of the team finished 6th, 10th, 12th, and 13th in the 33 boat fleet.

Tuesday for the AYC Junior Annual brought much better wind, we had a building southerly and by the end of the day we had 10-15 knots on the water. Zander King and Rees Tindall won the day, once again closely followed by Matt Buddington and Linnea Forsberg. Beckett Kumler and Orion Adelman finished fourth and the rest of the team finished in 6th, 7th, 8th, and 13th in the 33 boat fleet. A big thank you to all the volunteers that made these events happen and a great effort by all of our sailors.

George Carty and Zoe Hoctor were top Chessy finishers placing 14th out of 33 boats. Blake Vogel and Raam Fox were just behind placing 16th and Andrew Tollefson and Lucy Lobaugh in 17th!

The rest of the team was not far behind and you can follow the results.

Thank you to all race committee, volunteers, sailors, and parents who took part in the event and we look forward to our next event this week hosted by Gibson Island Yacht Squadron.
