Lewes Yacht Club Junior Olympics
The Junior Olympics in Lewes, Delaware, was a regatta with similar conditions to earlier events: light and shifty. We also had the added bonus of over a knot of current and sweltering heat!

Junior Fleet Staff

Opti Race Team

A big congratulations goes out to Kyle Reniecke and Chris Draper for having a really solid regatta finishing in the top 5 out of 38 boats overall and sailing pretty consistently over the course of two race days! Kyle finished first overall and 1st in Red Fleet and Chris Draper finished 5th overall and 3rd in Blue Fleet. It was a really awesome event sailing on the Delaware Bay this past week. Our sailors experienced everything from big waves, and strong currents to light and shifty by the end of the event. Lessons to take away from the Regatta in Lewes, DE: How to sail, start in 2 knots of current when the breeze is not very strong.

Opti Green Team

Strong winds and current challenged the six AYC Green Fleeters that competed in the 2019 Junior Olympic Regatta at Lewes Yacht Club. Over the course of two days the sailors completed 10 races, in conditions that ranged from drifty to breeze on. The sailors had a blast  despite the hot and humid conditions; taking full advantage of the beach launch set-up and splashing in the waves after racing wrapped up each day. Samuel “Skinny Lightning” de los Reyes, placed second overall in the 30 boat fleet, taking home the top AYC finish. Will Mohler, Will Rosenthal, Daniel Draper, Ben Gendell, and Charlotte Hugo all had finishes in the top half of the fleet, and showcased excellent sportsmanship towards their teammates and fellow competitors.

Laser Race Team

Cole Canuel represented the AYC laser team in Lewes, Delaware for the Junior Olympics at Lewes Yacht Club.  He sailed in the clinic on Tuesday and we were able to work on some heavy wind boat handling and speed.  During the regatta, the breeze was very up and down, and Cole took advantage of the windier races and hiked hard.  There was significant current that Cole managed well.  He won two races on Wednesday and ended the day tied for first.  Thursday was much lighter wind and with some close points at the top of the fleet, Cole ended the day in fourth.  It is great to see him steadily improving in recent regattas!

420 Race Team

The junior olympics in Lewes Delaware was a regatta with similar conditions to earlier events, light and shifty. We also had the added bonus of over a knot of current and sweltering heat! Regardless the team sailed well with Matt Buddington and Linnea Forsberg taking the win. Becker Kumler and Orion Adelman sailed a great last day to move from 4th to second. The whole team sailed great with every member in the top 11 of the 36 boat fleet. Immediately following the event the team headed to Newport for the Club 420 National Championship, and hopefully a break from the heat.

420 Chesapeake Team

This past week the Chesapeake Bay 420 team competed in the Junior Olympics hosted by Lewes Yacht Club in Delaware. The team arrived on Tuesday for a practice day and free clinic with a great southerly breeze all afternoon. Wednesday and Thursday brought some light and variable wind conditions with breeze anywhere from 5 to 12 knots with lots of current on the water. 7 Races were completed in the 2 days of racing.  Max Penders / Alex Brenia were the top Chessy 420 boat finishing in 16th place out of 36 boats. Will Donald / Raam Fox were not too far behind placing in 20th, and Andrew Tollefson / Lucy Lobaugh in 21st.
