2019 Oxford Regatta

Robert Lippincott, Optimist Program Manager

Annapolis Yacht Club brought a total of 50 junior sailors to this year’s Annual Oxford Regatta! This included AYC fleets of 24 420s, 3 Lasers, and 23 Optis. Our large team of AYC sailors had a blast this past weekend with some of the sailors having an opportunity to compete in the Annapolis to Oxford Race over on Friday. The RWB and Green Fleet Opti Race Teams had a wonderfully relaxing yet intense practice day on Friday, where they worked on everything from starting drills, to port tack approaches, to boat handling drills.

Saturday’s conditions were extremely light and shifty. As the Optis sailed out each morning they joined the ranks of Stars, Snipes, Comets, Albacores, and Penguins making their way to the starting line. The RWB Fleet also experienced six log canoes trying to start very close to their windward mark. The RWB race committee was able to complete six solid races before the day was over. Our sailors then enjoyed a nice team bonding social over at Brewers Yacht Yard pool and gas dock, put on by our Parent of the Regatta, Molly Wilmer. A big thanks goes out to all the parents who helped organize this team dinner.

Sunday was not looking so good on Saturday night, however on Sunday morning the breeze had filled into a nice 5 knots out of the northeast. Our sailors raced another two races on Sunday for a grand total of eight races in 5 to 7 knots of breeze all weekend.

The light and shifty conditions forced the sailors to focus on boat handling as well as tactics in order to make it around the course. Despite the challenging conditions this past weekend, the RWB sailors shined, with Kyle Reinecke taking home first place overall, Owen MacWilliams taking home 5th in Red Fleet and 6th overall, Conor Mastromarco finishing 3rd in Blue, Christopher Draper finishing 4th in Blue, and Beylen Gode finishing 5th in Blue. Congrats goes out to all AYC Sailors for attending and sailing another successful Oxford Regatta.

Though the racing ended early on Sunday after the wind died off after only three races, the sailors were in high spirits as they dressed to impress for the award ceremony held at the Harleigh Estate on Trippe Creek, up the Tred Avon River. The young sailors looked dapper in their coats and ties while they waited patiently to be recognized, before jumping into the pool for one last summer hoorah.

Special thank you to Tred Avon Yacht Club for the competitive racing and the Chesapeake Bay Yacht Club for another fantastic awards ceremony!
