AYC Brings Corinthian Cup Home

Linda Ambrose, Regatta Manager

With the best Annapolis conditions to date for the SFYC/AYC Corinthian Cup, AYC’s Open and Junior teams had a stellar performance on the water in the annual “friendly” competition with San Francisco Yacht Club. With racing on both Saturday and Sunday, the juniors posted only one loss in the match race event on Club J/22s with the open (adult) team posting wins in every match. Under sunny skies with conditions that were more spring-like than late August, the teams made up of four adults and four juniors from each Club began the event with a coin toss to determine the choice of starting line entry point for the team winning the toss. Per the Sailing Instructions, Saturday’s racing continued until one team reached seven points, which AYC did handily by mid-day. The first team to reach 12 points would be crowned Corinthian Cup winner, which after the completion of the 7th flight on Sunday, put Team AYC at 13 points.

The Corinthian Cup had its start in 2010 when first hosted by SFYC and sailed in Etchells. Since then, the event has rotated host venues every year, with the regatta sailed in both J/22s and J/70s depending on the year and host Club. Per the Deed of Gift, the Corinthian Cup structure and course management is done by a Committee made up of two members of each Club and a 5th member from neither Club. This event is a favorite of both Clubs, both on the water and during the shoreside events, with AYC showing off the entire campus with an opening reception at the Sailing Center, cocktails and dinner at the Main Clubhouse, and the trophy presentation at the Activity Center. Thanks to Steve Kling and Gina Henderson from AYC for their leadership on and off the water as members of the Committee, and Jeff Borland who put together a great Umpire team. Thanks as well to Bob Putnam and Mary Grealy who hosted SFYC’s Commodore and his wife aboard the boat to watch the competition. Results
