On December 26, 2018, the Annapolis Yacht Club’s Opti RWB Fleet met at Key Biscayne Yacht Club to rig and go over their boats before launching for a “shake off the rust” and tune up practice day out on Biscayne Bay. Our sailors were very excited to spend the tail end of the holiday season in sunny, warm Miami, FL, with their families and fellow competitors.

After launching from Key Biscayne Yacht Club, our sailors sailed out of the channel and practiced some fun but challenging starting and boat handling drills. They spotted marine life along the way which included a big sea turtle and a manatee! Toward the end of the practice day, our sailors did some down wind boat handling drills all the way to the Coral Reef Yacht Club’s basin, where they hauled out their boats and checked in at the registration table.

Racing commenced on December 27 and our sailors were eager to mix it up with some of the toughest competition internationally. All four of our opti sailors raced against 23 different countries and made some great new friends from around the world. For some of the AYC sailors this was their first Orange Bowl event and they all sailed well after having two months off.

Overall, our opti sailors sailed a fantastic event this year. Their confidence and starting line strategy in big fleets saw a huge improvement as the regatta went on. Our team experienced extremely challenging Biscayne Bay conditions in regards to understanding the shifts and upwind strategies/tactics. These challenging conditions contribute to Miami’s Biscayne Bay being one of US Sailing’s top Olympic training sites. This year’s regatta had gorgeous sailing conditions with breeze on (18-22 knots) for the first two days and 8-12 knots on the last two. Our team learned many lessons in the breeze and enjoyed coming down to Miami to be able to gain more experiences in the challenging conditions.

Stay tuned for more opti racing regatta results this winter in Florida.
