  • Race Teams
    • Optimist

The AYC Optimist program is designed to provide a continuum of training to allow participants to develop through our Learn-To-Sail (LTS) program, including the Creek Critter and Sea Squirt courses for ages 5-8, and the Beginner and Intermediate Optimist courses for those seeking to progress their skills in the Optimist class. From there, our Optimist program moves sailors up towards the learn-to-race Green Fleet, where first year racers learn the skills necessary to participate on a race course and begin competition at local regattas and events.

Finally, young sailors develop their skills necessary to become athletes on the Red, White, and Blue (RWB) Racing Team. With both local and travel events at this level, athletes see progression towards levels attained only by the best athletes in the sport. Along the way, the program is designed to promote sportsmanship and fair sailing, ensuring that sailors are enjoying their time on the water and challenging each sailor to progress as far as their drive and ability can take them.

For more information, contact Opti Program Manager Robert Lippincott, our Junior Fleet office via phone at (410) 263-9267, or email opticoach@annapolisyc.org.

      Seasonal Green Fleet & RWB
Sailors that are registered for seasonal Green Fleet will be assumed to be attending every practice, both weekday and weekends. If your sailor is not going to be at practice, please email opticoach@annapolisyc.org. Coaching staff to student ratio is based on registration and needs to be scheduled in advance.

Per Diem Green Fleet & RWB
For those registered as Per Diem, sailors are required to sign up for each practice 72 hours in advance. Each week, sailors and/or parents will receive an email with a reservation request. If no RSVP is received for the practice, we will assume that the sailor will not be attending.

If sailors RSVP to a practice and do not show, they will still be charged if an additional coach for that practice was planned based on the sailor's reservation. This is a policy that AYC Junior Sailing has in place so that coaches are not being over or under scheduled. If no RSVP is received and a sailor shows up to practice, they will not be permitted to participate.

Safety is AYC's first priority, and communicating with the Junior Fleet staff will ensure safe coach-to-sailor ratios and maintain adherence to AYC policy. All RSVPs must be indicated through the online RSVP or in an email to the Junior Fleet staff at opticoach@annapolisyc.org. Verbal RSVPs with coaches will not be accepted.
