Leukemia Cup Kicks off 2019 Planning with Club Leadership
John Heintz
The
2019 Annapolis Leukemia Cup Regatta season kicked off on Saturday, January 26,
with a Commodores’ and Leadership Luncheon at the home of Lynn Ohman and John Heintz. Heintz, the leading individual
fundraiser for the 2018 Regatta and first Annapolis Triple Crown of Charity
Racing Trophy winner, delivered an opening welcome followed by an introduction
from Leukemia Cup Chair Patrick Shannon and inspirational remarks from Gary Jobson,
who was in attendance with his wife Janice. AYC’s leadership team turned out in
force with Commodore
Jim and Lori Ellis, Vice Commodore Jonathan and Molly Bartlett,
Rear
Commodore Ed and Cindy Hartman, Treasurer Tim and Gretchen
Cusack, and Principal Race Officer Bobby Frey and Lynda Smith all
in attendance. AYC’s former Entertainment Committee Chair, Cindy Hartman, was announced as the co-chair for the Leukemia Cup Auction and Summer Gala being held at the
newly restored Skipjack on Friday, May
31 (stay tuned for more information on tickets and auction items). AYC member Bill Natter has volunteered to lead the “Team AYC”
participation and fundraising, a voluntary effort organized among individual
AYC members to support the Regatta both on and off the water. The Leukemia Cup
Regatta team also announced that there will be a public Kickoff for 2019 Regatta at AYC’s
new Sailing Center in late
March/early April (date and details being finalized).
The event was attended by leaders from sailing clubs and
organizations from Annapolis and the upper Chesapeake, including AYC, EYC, SSA,
Rock Creek Racing Association, and Gibson Island Yacht Squadron, with letters of
support from Miles River Yacht Club, Herring Bay Yacht Club, West River Sailing
Club, and Herrington Harbor Sailing Association. LLS is working to broaden
participation in and the impact of the Regatta fundraising efforts in 2019.
