New York Yacht Club Celebrates Major Milestone with Regatta

Linda Ambrose, Regatta Manager

To celebrate the 175th anniversary of its founding in 1844, NYYC hosted a regatta at their Harbour Court Clubhouse in Newport. A number of members were on the water during the week-long event, many of whom are also members of New York Yacht Club. Entries were limited to NYYC members and a small number of invited Clubs from around the world, plus U.S. Service Academies with entries of an LOA of 30' or greater.

Congratulations to Chris Larson, tactician on the IRC 52 Beau Geste, who finished in first place in IRC 1, 13 points ahead of the 2nd place finisher. The boat was incredibly well sailed as the team notched 9 bullets in 10 races, with the first race of the series their "worst" finish in the regatta... a 2nd!

Past AYC Jr. Program participant Porter Kavle was once again on board the modern 12 Metre, Challenge 12, as strategist, and as they did in the recent 12 Metre Worlds, found themselves in 1st place with a string of bullets on the board. Ian Gordon sailed on the 2nd place finisher in the class, Enterprise. Gary Jobson was tactician on Courageous, finishing third in the modern 12 Metre class.

In the Classic Yacht division, congratulations to F/C Robert Shapiro and Susan Shapiro for a great effort in their first major 'round the buoys regatta on their Hinckley Pilot 35, Susie. It was a family and friends affair with their crew, including Timothy Adelman, Tucker Thompson, and past AYC Jr. Program sailor son, Max Shapiro. The F/C has helped shape the new Spring Race to Oxford with his efforts in recruiting class yachts, including fellow Hinckley's.

Geoff Ewenson was aboard Interlodge IV once again, with over a 29 pt lead over the 2nd place boat in ORC 1. Paul Milo with Mark Hillman on board were 5th in IRC 2 on the J/122 Orion. In the IC37 Division on Double Jointed, an amazing 5th place finish in a 21 boat deep class - Ray and Jenn Wulff, Aden Hutchinson, and Charlie Lomax. Tony Parker competed on his entry with a "local" nod on Chesapeake. In the ORC 2 division, Chris Groobey shared skipper duties on the Summit 40 Escape Velocity.
