The bonus round for being declared the overall NOOD winner from all teams competing at the 2019 event is being invited to represent your hometown Helly Hansen NOOD Regatta at a fall sailing championship in the British Virgin Islands. This year’s winner of a berth on a Sunsail Beneteau 47 for the Caribbean Championship was John White and his team on USA 1162, the winner of the hotly contested J/80 class. With scheduling issues for the J/80 crew, the challenge fell to Matt (Merchant Marine Academy) and Lori Schubert, who won the J/22 class in ‘19 after solidifying a win against fellow Club member and former college rival, J.R. Maxwell (Tufts). The Schuberts were tied with Maxwell heading into the final day in the 23-boat J/22 fleet, but in the end the Schuberts came out on top.

The Caribbean Championship with representatives from all five NOOD Regattas may be held in an island paradise where the rum flows as freely as the Caribbean water, but it is no less competitive than that of the home waters. Check out Sailing World Editor Dave Reed’s coverage of the Championship and mark your calendar for the 2020 Helly Hansen NOOD Regatta in Annapolis, May 15-17.
